A Note About Our Neighbors

"Neighbors" is the term we us for the ill, frail, or elderly whom we serve. The term originated with Sister Veronica, our founder. She used it to reflect her love for everyone she served, and we continue the tradition today.

Testimonials

“When my husband became ill and was unable to drive, and I was also unable to drive; we called Caregiver Companion. My appreciation for their service is more than I can put into words. I always receive a response to my calls; anytime I have needed transportation they are there to help me. Their friendliness, their professionalism, and their cooperation is the best. I can never thank them enough.”

“My husband Richard and I want to express our thanks for the care and service you provide. Helen’s original visit to assess our needs was friendly and professional. She was able to offer the services of Bob to visit with Richard once a week. Bob is a delight, and his presence gave me great confidence to leave our home for a while. I had no concerns and he and Richard found much to talk about. We miss him! Bless you, your ministry, and all those who serve with you. You are such a blessing to us.”

“I started some years ago as a volunteer when Sister Veronica began at St. Ann’s. There were about 10 of us in the beginning, working on a rotating basis. We went into the community working with families who needed relief from their loved ones who were confined because of a family illness. I was assigned to an Alzheimer’s patient. One woman in West Lafayette who had mercury in her system and her husband needed one day a month to bowl. In another case, I would stay with Bernie who was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s. He and his wife had a huge piano in their living room and when I asked Bernie to play “Deep Purple” he said “NO!” The next time I went to visit him he sat down and played “Deep Purple” for me.

I never thought I would be in need of Caregiver Companion, but five years ago I lost my daughter to cancer. I moved away for a bit and when I returned, I needed their help. They came through with some remarkable people.”

“I enjoy volunteering for Caregiver Companion because the people we support are genuinely appreciative and Marilyn & Helen run a good ship, weeding out problems before they happen. It’s a great way to give back and to realize that many people are in need of help.”

“I was going on 38 years at my job when I got the phone call that my mom had a severe stroke. She couldn’t walk, talk, or use her right side when I quit my job to take care of her at home.

Without stepping outside of the house for several weeks I began to be withdrawn. It was obvious I needed a break. Caregiver Companion gave me time away, and I felt uplifted and ready to cope once again with my daily care for mom. Caregiver Companion was there for me many times in the following seven and a half years while I took care of mom and it was so good to know I could count on them.

After mom died I wanted to help Caregiver Companion so I began to drive for them, take people to appointments, wait on them, and then take them home. I have met all types of people, in all walks of life, and it’s so interesting visiting with them.

Now, after several years, my deformed knees are worse and weaker and walking has become hard to do. I need help getting to appointments when it is a long walking distance to the doctor’s office, and Caregiver Companion has come in so handy for me. I’d be up a creek without their assistance now and then.”

Caregiver Companion is an outstanding group. They are not about power or prestige, they are about caring for human beings who need assistance in many areas and are willing to go out of their way to give people the help they need.

CURRENT NEEDS:  Drivers are needed; if you like to drive please give us a call at 423-1879.  Springtime always finds us saying goodbye to our Purdue students who primarily help us with housework.  This leaves us extremely shorthanded during the summer months for our neighbors who need someone to run the sweeper or mop the kitchen floor.  Lawn Mowing and yardwork are another summertime need.  Please consider helping someone in this capacity, if you are able.  This is a great project for students and families on summer break who want or need some service learning hours.
